Tamil Cinema is largely produced in India. The Earliest movies were made by British film producers. The first silent movie was made in 1916 as the movie don't have sound there will be a person staying near the stage will give voice for the actors and actresses. Most of the time he don't have a script and he will say the story as per his wish. Then in 1931 the Tamil movies start to come with sound, and then they came with 60 - 65 songs. In the early days there were no female actresses, men did the role of female part. 

Slowly the trend changed and female actress came to take part in the movies. And in the earlier days actors and actresses with the singing talent were given chance as hero and heroine. Those days Thiyagraja Bagavathar, T.R.Mahalingam were in the lead role of many movies with their singing talent. Then the song era came to an end when actor Sivaji Ganeshan took the lead role in the movie "Parasakthi" the Tamil movies start to base on expression and acting talent with the Tamil dialogue.
