When comedians turn into full fledged heroes; you need a good script to convince the audiences to make it work.Unfortunately, Karunas a middle level comedian’s earnest and sincere attempt to turn hero with Ambasamuthiram Ambani falters due to a weak script.
The film definitely has a nice, feel-good message but writer-director Ramnath’s script lets him down. Dhandapani (Karunas) an orphan comes to Chennai from a village near Dindigal with only one aim to become rich only through hard work and devotion.
He starts as a newspaper delivery boy who soon starts his own agency due to his determination and dreams of becoming the next Dhirubhai Ambani! Dhandapani does all kinds of odd jobs, gets up at 3am in the morning to pray loudly and wakes up the neighbours, who love his dedication and determination to make it to the top. He has an assistant Karthi (Master Shankar), a slum boy who he rehabilitates due to his kind heart.
His neighbour Nandhini (Navneet Kaur) falls for him seeing his determination, but he has no time to respond to her. Meanwhile Dhandapani gets near his goal of making it big when he pays an advance to buy a shop at a mall which is being built by his mentor Annachi (Kota Sreenivasa Rao), who gave him his first break.
Annachi warns him that he is in too much of a hurry to reach the top, but he does not heed to it and promises to pay the rest of the money in instalments before the mall is commissioned. However fate plays a cruel hand and Dhandapani is left in the lurch just before the climax twist.
Karunas is earnest and does a good job as Dhandapani but is no hero material which pulls down the film. Navneeth Kaur looks glamorous in the song sequences, while Cheranraj as Annachi’s son with grey shades is adequate.
Kota is brilliant as Annachi and Master Shankar as Karunas assistant and his nemesis is a good performer. The music of Karunas is disappointing and is jarring as songs are thrust into the narration.
