Movie Azhagana Ponnuthan Director Thiru Music Sundar C Babu Cast Namitha, Kartheesh

Namitha’s three years in the making Thiru directed Azhagana Ponnuthan, should have remained in the cans. The actress who is struggling to regain her lost form is in for a jolt, as the film is unlikely to give her that elusive hit.Director Thiru has lifted the story and plot from the 1971 classic Robert Mulligan directed Summer of 42. In the original the film starts where the script writer of the film Herman Raucher goes down memory lane and recollects his teenage and the summer vacation he spent in his village. There he has a one-sided romance with a woman who is much older to him, whose husband had gone off to fight the Second World War. It was a pathbreaking “coming-of-age” film which has now been almost remade crudely with a lot of unnecessary Tamil nativity thrown in to glorify the heroine character as a ‘Sati Savithri’. Like the original, the Tamil film opens with actor Parthipan recollecting that one woman for whom he developed a crush during his teens. The scene shifts to Kodaikanal where Karthik (Karteesh) a student during his vacation falls madly in love (One-sided) with Jennifer (Namitha), a beautiful woman seen visiting the local church. Everybody in the place from the postman to the vegetable cart pusher has a soft corner for her. Till interval the film is all about Karthik imagining romantic interludes and meetings with Jennifer laced with dream songs. Post interval Karthik goes loony due to his deep and passionate love for her. The rest of the film becomes a sob story as we are told Jennifer’s husband (a framed picture of television artist Abhishek) died in the Indo-Pak war of 1971, the local women think she is out to seduce their husbands and finally she is driven out of the place! The film falls flat as the narration is weak. There are continuity problems in Namitha’s make-up. The reason why Summer of 42 is considered a classic is the chemistry between Gary Grimes who played the 15 year old Hermes lusting after Jennifer O’Neil and the passionate build up to the final act.Azhagana Ponnuthan, just does not work because there is no passion or build up and the whole thing is in the hero’s imagination! Added to that there is crude comedy, songs including an item number are thrust in plus lots of melodrama and ladies sentiments in the climax. Keep away from this film, which leaves you cold!
