Welcome back to real solid filmmaking with debutant A Surkunam’s Kalavani, undoubtedly one of the finest movies to have emerged out of Kollywood in recent times. The film is a triumph of honest writing and neat packaging with riveting performances from the entire cast of mostly newcomers. Two villages in Thanjavur area are always at loggerheads with each other and it spills even to T 20 cricket match between kids from both the villages. Arikki (Pasanga fame Vimal) is a wayward son of a mother (Saranya) who is in awe at the same time fears him. Her husband (Ilavarasu) is away in Dubai and a large part of the money he sends home is taken away by Arikku using extortionist methods like threatening to break the TV set at home! Arikki yet to pass his 12th standard spends his time in TASMAC bars with his friends, teases girls and asks them to profess their love for him, and gets into brawls after conning others. He meets Maheshwari (Oviya) and wants her to declare her love for him, which she finally confesses. Her brother Ilango (Thirumurugan) is a tough guy who has an axe to grind against Arikki and his gang, which leads to the twist in the climax. What works big time is the treatment and screenplay of the director whose screenplay is smashingly original. The romance between Arikki and Maheshwari is brought out so beautiful, emotions are well worked out. Take for example the fond hope of the mother that her son will change for the better as predicted by astrologers and he will reach the “top”. A drunken Arikki on the run from the villagers get into the front seat of a car only to find his father coming back from the gulf after seven years is in the backseat. Father selling off the laptop he had brought for his son who was said to be doing a “computer course”. The comedy track of the film just using Ganja Karuppu, is a scream. It has been well woven into the narration as Arikki and his friends make his character ‘Panchayathu’, a bakra throughout the film. Thank god there are no stars in the film, as the entire film works due to the characters that the director moulded out. Vimal as Arikku has done justice to the tailor made role, while Oviya is ideal foil and they have great on screen chemistry which keeps the romance crackling. New guy Thirumurugan as Ilango is the perfect angry brother. Saranya and Ilavarasu make the film work better. The major plus point is that there is no blood or gore that one would associate with Tamil village story. The music of SS Kumaran is average, while Omprakash’s camera is good. The film needs some trimming in the first half, to make it as racy as the second half. The end scenes as title card rolls is hilarious. On the whole Kalavani is a knockout entertainer set in a rural milieu. Have fun. |
